The Loom

Spring arrives!

Now you can see why it's called the backstrap loom! For the time being I'm using the harness I use for work in the Grove. To pull the weft or cross threads through, one pulls against the backstrap to create tension; the sticks then spread the warp threads apart. The greater diameter stick in the middle is the most important in this. It is called the "shed roll". This I made somewhat later...

from a peice of sumac. Here I'm fitting together the two halves that I have sawn apart then hollowed out.

When bonded together they form a hollow space in the middle that I have filled with special stones from the stream. Each time the threads move the rattle sounds.
