In the late eighteenth century a new 'long-arm', the rifle, began to replace the old smooth-bore musket, which had been used throughout Europe for centuries. The British Army was slow to adopt the new weapon but after 1800 the rifle began to make its presence felt and in the mid nineteenth century it superseded the smooth-bore musket as the Army's standard weapon.
